The Online Petition numbers are steadily growing. Check out what some of the comments the petitioners have left:
- I, personally, don’t think the chicken should be on the roof - it’s HUGE! But I thought the placement on the sidewalk was cute! It’s not an eyesore there IMO. ~ LS
- I don’t agree with the demise of the Viking, given the reasons that the previous owner gave for not renewing the lease, I certainly don’t think anyone should back pedal on public announcement of not opening a new restaurant due to “parking”. I don’t think the chicken is an issue. ~ KT
- If I can be subjected to a monsterous flashing television projection ad screen EVERY time I drive down I5, how can a chicken that is tucked up against a building that I can only see if I am driving past the building from ONE side of that building be a nuisance? Please allow the chicken to return! ~ JH
- Lighten up and give save traditions in our community. Thanks ~ DE
- We have told our friends and family about the Rooster and love seeing it each time we are on our way home. Aren’t there more important issues in our community to address? Let’s leave the chicken alone and get on to some safety issues of our community. Thanks ~ DE
- So many things in Lake Stevens have already changed… lets keep the chicken. We’ve already lost so much of the “old” town with all the stores and development. The chicken is harmless… I think it’s time to re-examine the sign codes and make appropriate changes or exceptions. ~ AH
- “That government is best which governs the least, because its people discipline themselves.” Thomas Jefferson
- I usually follow written guidelines, but sometimes history and tradition takes common-sense. The Chicken is an icon in downtown and is the type of character we want to keep. ~ TW
- This is completely outrageous! I’m a junior from the high school and there is no reason why the chicken should be removed, I want to be able to run with the chicken when I graduate next year. This is ridiculous! ~ CE
- My children attended LS High and were part of the tradition—Please return the chicken ~ NJ
- It’s art, kitsch, whimsy and a local icon. The Lake Stevens City Council should all be sent back to kindergarten until they relearn the spirit of play. Viva el pollo! ~ DS
- The tradition of stealing the chicken has been with Lake Stevens for such a long time that is was already established as a tradtion before my dad went to LSHS! Why take away such a long lived tradtion? ~ J
- Chicken = No Lake Stevens ~ FT
- The chicken must remain. Lets put our council to work on real issues, of which there are plenty. ~ KA
- As a 08′ LSHS Senior, I can’t believe Lake Stevens City Council is challenging whether the Chicken should be allowed in the city proper. Those who oppose the Chicken being in downtown Lake Stevens apparently value bureaucracy over nostalgic and harmless tradition. Give a pardon to the Chicken. ~ LG
- The loss of an icon like this in my mind chips away at what is left of my youth… j***** e***** graduating class of 1984. ~ JE
- It would be disappointing to see the bird go am a 9th grader and I want to see the tradition keep going. Thats why I want the chicken to stay ~ JL
- This is depressing! The chicken being taken away like so many other things from the kids. What’s left for our children but to sit on the couch and play video games or watch tv. ~ PVS
- I work in downtown Lake Stevens and look at the chicken almost every day. I think it adds character to the downtown area. There isn’t much to look at and you never know it may draw business. I think that most people don’t even know where downtown LS is. ~ AT I’ve signed, and I left a long comment elsewhere. I’m afraid I’m too late for the meeting at the council meeting at the school bldg., but maybe it will help in the near future. ~ JG
- From what I’ve seen the ten years I’ve lived here Lake Stevens values it’s history and tradition. Why can’t the city do something to keep this part of history alive. Keep on taking the small things away which separate us from the cookie cutter all other cities are being made from. ~ KS
- Don’t let the City Council lay an egg. Gotta save the chicken. If NY has a giant bull, and Seattle boasts of a great brass pig, why can’t we have a big chicken? Lets put coin in it for a local charity like they do w/Rachel at Pike Place, would that make it better to the Council?
- Leave the chicken alone! is it really hurting anyone?! ~ AR
- I would like my tax paying dollars to go to something more important. the council has turned this trivial matter into something more than what it should be. now our local government is a laughing stalk. I’m in fear for my garden gnomes. ~ SW
- Please let the chicken continue the tradition it’s held for many years. What’s next? We will need a permit to display our yard decorations. Thank you, ~ DO
- City Council, GET OVER YOURSELVES!!!!!!!!! It’s a statue of a chicken that is part of the Chicken Drive Inn. Not a big neon in your face sign. ~ LR

Its is absurd! Return the chicken, is it harming anyone? Give the upcoming seniors a chance to be part of a proud tradition. No Chicken = No Lake Stevens
I just read a letter in the LS Journal from JD Nelson and wonder what is the big deal? I have been a resident of LS for 30 yrs and don’t thinks its a big deal either way. Nelson says it’s ridiculous, ugly,an eyesore and should not be on the sidewalk roof or property. Is Nelson another “newcomer” to Lake Stevens? If so go home and leave us alone.
You can’t assume that only “newcomers” aren’t supporting the chicken. There are a large number of “old timers” who don’t approve as well.
To LS Resident: I realize that some “old timers”(much depends on what you consider an old timer) may not care about the “chicken”. I also realize that regardless of the opinion of these “old timers” regarding this issue, I doubt very much that they are behind the theft of the chicken or the harassment of the current lessee of the drive-in. Those of us who are “old timers” have been dedicated to the definition of small town USA. That includes looking out for those in the community, whether it’s a local business or a private citizen. We supported our businessess and knew the owners and proprietors because they were residents and/or our friends. I don’t see that mentality much among the “newcomers”. Most of us don’t long for the strip malls, condo’s, shopping centers, and the “yuppie” lifestyle. I also realize the beauty of the lake and surrounding countryside attracts those with money and those with a desire to change the area to fit “their” wants and needs. You take over these small communities and run roughshod over the locals until you run them out of business and out of their town. You object to the chicken. Why? You object to the drive-in. Why? Does it not meet your idea of aesthetics? We should build something like McDonald’s instead? We have that outside of downtown already. Downtown Lake Stevens, in the past, has strived to keep the renovations of the existing buildings in line with the historical feel of the town. The signs for the library and city hall were made by the woodshop students at the high school. Every citizen has been encouraged, and allowed to participate if they chose to. The chicken has been a part of that hometown tradition. Obviously, the criminal element has been encouraged to take the matter into their own hands and I don’t think that criminal element came from the “old timers” regardless of their feelings on the matter. If you can refute this, then I’d have to conclude that you know the person or persons responsible for the theft of said chicken.
It is obvious the the PD is either too involved elsewhere or care not at all that this crime has been committed. As for the political bias and corruption within the town, the county and at the local paper, it’s business as usual. So, in closing, welcome to your new community, with all the political posturing, crime, and hate mongering.
